Karlstejn castle

A gothic castle situated on a hill amid romantic countryside southwest of Prague. The castle was founded in 1348 by Bohemian King and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Charles IV as a stronghold for safekeeping of the imperial regalia. Later, at the out break of the Hussite religious wars, the Czech crown jewels were brought here and kept at Karlstejn with several short breaks for almost 200 years. The castle was rebuilt in Late Gothic style in the 15th century, in Renaissance style in the 16th century and at the end of the 19th century the last, Neo-gothic reconstruction was carried out.

There are two tours available at Karlstejn.

Tour I is available on every open day and includes historical interiors of the Imperial palace and the lower floors of the Marian tower with valuable equipment of 14th to 19th centuries. (Courtier's Hall, Hall of Knights with the chapel of St. Nicolas, Chapter Deanery, Royal Bedroom, Audience and Banquet Halls, Hall of Ancestors, Treasury and Jewels Hall, former prison.

Groups of 10 or more visitors have to book their tour in advance. Visitors are required to join a guided tour; groups are of maximum 55 people, which takes approx. 50 minutes.

Tour II is available from June 1st till October 31st and passes through the Marian and Great towers and offers a visit to the Church of Our Lady, the Chapel of St. Catharine, the former Sacristy, a wooden suspension bridge, the lapidary museum, the castle's picture gallery, and the library with an exposition of the last reconstruction of the castle as well as the Holy Cross Chapel.

(Every visitor is required to book this tour in advance) The tour is organised for individuals and groups, which are of maximum 12 visitors, and takes approx. 70 minutes.

The castle is closed from January 7th till February 28th and on Mondays.

Karlstejn is easily accessible by train. The ride from the Smichov train station takes about 40 minutes. After arrival in Karlstejn either by train or car, visitors can take a horse drawn carriage or a walk through the town up to the castle.
