Krivoklat castle

The Krivoklat castle is one of the oldest and best-preserved Gothic castles in the country. Its history dates back to the 12th century when a Romanesque castle was built on the site. It was used as a favourite hunting lodge by Premyslid princes and kings and the seat of the Royal Master of Hounds. Krivoklat’s Gothic reconstruction was carried out in the late 13th century during the reign of King Premysl Otakar II and continued by Wenceslas IV in the 14th century. In the late 15th and early 16th century the castle was greatly enlarged by King Ladislav Jagellio who built the Gothic hall, which resembles the famous Vladislas Hall at Prague castle.

Charles IV, Czech King and Holy Roman Emperor, had spent some time at Krivoklat as a child before being sent off to France. Since the 16th century Krivoklat served as a royal prison. Edward Kelly, the English alchemist, was kept prisoner for more than two years in the Round Tower for not being able to produce the philosopher’s stone for Emperor Rudolf II. After a devastating fire in 1826 the castle was bought by the noble Furstenberg family that had it completely restored.

There are two tours available at Krivoklat:

Tour One includes the historical interiors of the castle chapel, the Great Royal and Chivalric Halls with an exhibition of Gothic paintings and sculptures, the famous castle prison with torture chambers and torture instruments and the dungeon.

Tour Two is a complete tour of the entire castle. Aside from visiting the Gothic halls of the upper castle, visitors will see the castle library, museum and painting gallery of the Furstenbergs, the Great Tower with its collection of hunting trophies, the Huderka Tower with an open-hearth kitchen, and will have a chance to take a walk along the castle fortification walls.

It is possible to combine a visit to Krivoklat castle with an excursion to the nearby glassworks Ruckl Crystal in Nizbor.
