The Old Town

A more detailed tour of the Old town. The Old town is the first and oldest of the four Prague towns. We will start in the Old Town Square which is the oldest market square in Prague and also a stage of Czech history. I will mention several crucial events of Czech history connected with this place, we will see the Astronomical clock, the Tyn Church and The Church of St. Nicholas. You will learn about Ungelt, a courtyard where once customs duty was collected from foreign merchants, we will walk in the Church of St. James with immensely rich baroque interior and continue to the Powder Tower and Municipal House, an Art Nouveau building. From here we will continue, passing by the Estates Theater, where Mozart ‘s opera Don Giovanni was performed for the first time in 1878 and the Carolinum, the first seat and today the rectorate of Charles University. Walking through Havelsky market (the oldest open air market place) and Coal market, we will come to the Betlehem Square with the Betlehem Chapel, a replica of the old chapel in which Jan Hus, a religious reformer, held his sermons. Soon we will reach Klementinum, once a college built by the Jesuit order and then will continue to Josefov, the Jewish town, part of the Old Town area. We will pass by six synagogues, the Cemetery, the Jewish town hall and on the way I will acquaint you with the history of the Jewish community in Prague. Our tour will end at the Spanish synagogue, not far from the Old town Square.
