Hradčany Town

On this tour we will explore the area of the third Prague town called Hradcany (Castle town). After having arrived with a tram we will begin at the Strahov monastery. The monastery of the order of Premonstratentians was first built on the Strahov hill in the 12th century. Here we will visit the famous Strahov library which holds in its collections many rare manuscripts and early prints. Two library halls – Theological and Philosophical are worth seeing. Our next stop will be in the Loretto Square. There you will hear about the huge Cernin palace, today the headquaters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Loretto Church. Inside you will see the Santa Casa, a replica of a cottage in which Virgin Mary and Jesus lived in Nazareth and the Loretto treasure, comprising collections of precious liturgical objects (the best known of them is the Diamond Monstrance). After the Loretto we will walk through the winding streets of the New World, a quiet, charming corner of the Hradcany town with its modest but pretty houses. On the way to the Hradcany Square we will pass by the Church of St. John of Nepomuk, another of many Prague Baroque churches. This one designed by the famous Prague architect K. I. Dientzenhoffer. In the main square of this town we will admire a great Renaissance style palace, The Schwarzenberg Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Tuscany Palace, as well as the Marian Column in the middle of the square. Here, in front of the main gate of Prague Castle our tour will end.
