Strahov Library and Monastery

This tour will take you to the famous Strahov Library, which houses many manuscripts and early prints and also boasts magnificent Baroque architecture. The visit to the Strahov Abbey will follow afterwards.

The Premonstratensians are an order of canons regular founded in 1120 by the bishop St Norbert.

The Royal Canonry of Premonstratensians at Strahov is one of the oldest monasteries of the Premonstratensian Order in the world. It was founded in 1143. The monastery has survived to this day in spite of fires, the Hussite Wars, religious wars, and the Communist regime. The famous Strahov Library traces its origin to the foundation of the monastery. Several disasters the Abbey suffered over the centuries interrupted the development of its collections.

The books collected after the end of the Thirty Years War were given a dignified place of storage in the newly constructed library hall (1679), now known as the Theological Hall.

The Library collections expanded significantly in the second half of the 17th and in the 18th centuries which resulted in building another library hall (the Philosophical Hall) at the end of the 18th century.

On this tour we will visit the interiors of the Library, admiring the extensive frescoes, original book shelves, sculptural decorations, and books, as well as collections of curiosities.

We can continue with the visit of the historical halls of the Abbey where the permanent exhibition of monumental Baroque paintings about the life of St Norbert is installed.

The Strahov Picture Gallery which boasts one of the most prominent monastic collections in Central Europe is worth exploring as well.
